What Is a What to Draw Wheel?
A What to Draw Wheel is a visual spinner that randomly selects one drawing idea from a list of prompts. It gives you a subject to start sketching when you are unsure what to draw.
This drawing ideas wheel comes with ready-made subjects, and you can edit the list for your own practice or art challenge. The result is a text prompt; the wheel does not generate artwork.

How to Use the What to Draw Wheel
- Review Drawing ideas. Keep the starter subjects or use Add an idea and Add to include your own. Edit the labels directly in the list.
- Choose eligible prompts. Uncheck ideas you want to leave out, or Delete entries you do not want. Paste ideas, one per line and Add pasted entries can build a custom list.
- Press Spin. The wheel reveals one selected idea at the pointer and in the Winner result.
- Start your drawing. Use the subject as a sketch prompt. Spin Again runs another ordinary spin; Remove Winner removes that selected entry if you want fewer repeats.
Wheel settings includes Wheel title, Automatic segment colors, Duration in seconds (1–10), Sound on and Celebration on. These change presentation or feedback, not which eligible idea is randomly selected.
What Drawing Ideas Are on the Wheel?
The default wheel contains 25 drawing ideas. Here is the exact starter list:
- Cat
- Dog
- Dragon
- Castle
- Robot
- Tree
- Flower
- Mountain
- Ocean
- Spaceship
- Dinosaur
- Butterfly
- House
- Car
- Bird
- Fish
- Monster
- Superhero
- City
- Island
- Moon
- Sun
- Portrait
- Landscape
- Fantasy Creature
The subjects range from everyday objects and animals to places and imaginary creatures. This is a general drawing-prompt set, rather than a specialized character or fandom wheel. Reset wheel and history restores this exact list.
Use the Wheel When You Don’t Know What to Draw
Spin once to get a starting subject, then begin with its simplest shapes. You do not need to decide on the final composition before making the first marks.
“I don’t know what to draw”
Choosing a subject is the first obstacle.
One starting prompt
Let the wheel choose an idea, then start with a rough sketch.
For example, a subject such as Tree can be approached as a silhouette, a close-up of branches or a scene. Those are ways to interpret a prompt, not extra options generated by the tool.
What to Draw When You’re Bored
Use the selected idea for a quick sketch, a timed exercise you organize yourself or a more detailed drawing. A small constraint can make it easier to begin a casual drawing session.
You might draw the outline first, try a different viewpoint or use your own style. If you prefer another subject, use Spin Again. The wheel chooses the prompt; you choose the materials, time and level of detail.
Use the Drawing Wheel to Beat Art Block
The wheel can offer a starting prompt when choosing an idea feels difficult. Treat it as a small constraint for a warm-up, rather than pressure to create a finished piece.
Try a rough version of the chosen subject, or adapt it to something you feel comfortable drawing. It cannot guarantee inspiration or cure art block. Taking a break or choosing your own subject remains an option.
Can You Add Your Own Drawing Ideas?
Yes. Use Add an idea, edit a label in Drawing ideas, or paste one idea per nonblank line and press Add pasted entries. You can Delete, uncheck to disable, Shuffle the list order or Clear all entries.
The wheel supports up to 500 total entries, including disabled ones, and 200 Unicode characters per normalized label. Short custom prompts work best visually. Blank labels are rejected. Entry pages contain 25 records; Previous entries and Next entries navigate longer lists.
Editing a label keeps its internal ID. Disabled ideas are excluded from spins; deleting removes the record. Entry changes clear the current result display but leave recorded winner history intact. Matching labels are allowed as separate entries.
Can You Spin Again for Another Drawing Idea?
Yes. After a result, choose Spin Again or use the main Spin button to run another spin. A selected idea stays eligible unless you delete, disable or remove it, so the same prompt can appear again.
One spin
One selected prompt → draw that subject.
Three separate spins
Three prompt results → combine them into one drawing. Repeats can occur.
Remove Winner removes only the selected entry ID from the current list. If the same label appears in another entry, that record remains eligible. Dismiss hides the result without removing the idea. Winner history keeps up to 100 completed results; Clear history clears those records without changing the entry list.
When localStorage is available, entries, settings and history persist on the same browser/device/site origin. The current result panel itself is not restored on reload. Blocked storage keeps changes only for the page session. Reset wheel and history restores the original ideas and settings and clears history.
How Does the What to Draw Wheel Pick an Idea?
The wheel randomly chooses one enabled entry, then animates to reveal that entry at the pointer. The movement does not decide the winner: selection happens first.
The existing Wheel Engine uses the browser’s Web Crypto random values. Rejection sampling discards values that would bias a random index. The engine selects an entry from the enabled list and calculates a rotation that places its segment under the pointer.
There is no Math.random fallback in this selection path. If secure randomness is unavailable or fails, the tool reports an error. These implementation details do not amount to certified or audited randomness. Sound and celebration are optional feedback; reduced motion skips moving effects.
Does Every Drawing Idea Have an Equal Chance?
Yes: before you customize the wheel, each of the 25 unique enabled default ideas has the same chance on each spin: 1 / 25 = 4%. All default entries have weight 1.
Probability follows the eligible entry list. With N enabled equal-weight entries, each entry has a 1/N chance. Disabled entries have no chance; adding or removing entries changes the denominator.
A previous result does not make another idea “due.” Repeated spins can repeat a prompt. This wheel has no adjustable weighting control; duplicate labels are separate entry records, as explained below.
What Happens If You Add the Same Drawing Idea Twice?
The same text can appear in two separate entries with different internal IDs. The wheel does not merge them, and each enabled entry has its own equal chance.
For example, a custom list containing Cat, Cat, Tree, Robot has four enabled equal-weight records. For one spin, the two Cat-labelled entries collectively have a 2 / 4 = 50% chance; Tree and Robot each have 1 / 4 = 25%. This example applies only when all four are enabled.
Duplicating a label increases its representation in that list. It is not a dedicated weighting feature, and removing one winning Cat entry leaves the other Cat entry available.
Drawing Challenges You Can Try
Use the prompt as a rule for an activity you organize yourself. These challenges are editorial suggestions, not additional controls or built-in modes.
One Spin
Draw the first result without spinning again.
Quick Sketch
Set your own short timer and sketch the subject.
Combination
Spin three times and combine the prompts.
Style
Draw the selected subject in a style you choose.
Memory
Try drawing the subject from memory.
What to Draw Wheel Examples
These are illustrative configurations and ways to use real starter subjects, not reported random outcomes.
A normal spin
Keep the 25 starter ideas, press Spin and draw whichever subject is selected. Cat, Castle and Landscape are examples already on the wheel.
A custom practice list
Replace the list with Tree, Flower and Portrait for a smaller practice session. Each enabled entry has a 1/3 chance.
A combination drawing
Run three separate spins, then combine the results. You could plan a scene using subjects such as Robot, City and Moon, but those specific results are not promised.
A short warm-up
Use any selected subject for a rough sketch when you are bored or struggling to pick a starting idea. Set any time limit yourself.
What to Draw Wheel vs Other Drawing Idea Generators
This What to Draw Wheel offers visual spinning-wheel selection from an editable prompt list. A generic drawing idea generator may present an idea without a wheel interaction.
A character or fandom wheel uses a narrower subject set. This page stays focused on general drawing ideas. You can choose a tool by the subject list and interaction you want; no format guarantees a better drawing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I draw when I don’t know what to draw?
Spin for one starting subject, then sketch its simple shapes. You can keep the result, adapt it or choose your own idea.
How does the What to Draw Wheel work?
It selects one enabled idea at random before animation, then reveals that prompt at the pointer and in the result. The default list contains 25 ideas.
What can I draw when I’m bored?
Use the selected subject for a quick sketch, a detailed drawing or an exercise in your own style. Any timer or drawing method is up to you.
Can the wheel help when I have art block?
It can supply a starting constraint when choosing a subject feels difficult. It does not guarantee inspiration or cure art block.
Can I add my own drawing ideas?
Yes. Add, edit or paste labels, delete entries or uncheck them to disable them. The limits are 500 total entries and 200 Unicode characters per normalized label.
Can I spin again for another idea?
Yes. Spin Again or Spin runs another ordinary spin. Ideas can repeat unless removed or disabled; Remove Winner deletes only the selected ID.
Are the drawing ideas picked randomly?
Yes. The existing engine uses Web Crypto with rejection sampling to select an enabled entry before the animation. It has no insecure Math.random selection fallback.
Does every drawing idea have an equal chance?
Before customization, the 25 unique enabled weight-1 defaults each have a 1/25 = 4% chance. Customization changes the eligible list and may change label representation.
What happens if I add the same drawing idea twice?
Matching labels remain separate ID records and do not merge. If both are enabled, both contribute a chance for that label. There is no dedicated weight control.
Can I use the wheel for drawing challenges?
Yes. Try one-spin, quick-sketch, combination, style or memory exercises. These are activity suggestions; the tool does not include timer, style or memory modes.
